Max, aka “Rambo cat”

Christmas basket

I have done a few posts on my cat, Lou.  I realized I never

did the same for my other baby, Max.  I love him very much,

but he isn’t as funny as Lou.  He is more my husband’s cat.  If

Jim is out in the garage, Max will sit on the counter right by the

door and wait for him.  But I wanted to give some attention

on my blog to Max.  I renamed him “Rambo cat” because the other

day, he was running around like crazy and went to jump on a ledge

at the top of our stairs (on the second floor of our house), completely

missed, and fell to the first floor.  He knocked the thermostat off the wall

on the way down.  Jim and I were watching a movie, and when we ran

downstairs, he was hiding under the dining room table.  He was

playing with his ball a few minutes later.  I guess cats really do land

on their feet!

Adventures in Babysitting Building

I learned something the other day.  The famous building in Chicago with the diamond-shaped

roof is called the Smurfit-Stone Building.  Who knew?  I had just always called it the

Adventures in Babysitting building.  Remember that scene where the little girl climbs

down the rope out of the window and is hanging there until her brother rescues her?

I personally think the scene was ruined when after he gets her, she says “Oh Brad”

in this breathy, creepy way no one should ever be saying their brother’s name.

Oh well, I love this movie anyway, and think its one of the classic movies of the

80’s (of course way down on the list from the Brat Pack movies).

I was out late one night and got a shot of an empty Van Buren train station.

The skyline with the Smurfit-Stone building in the background is a bonus,

in my opinion.  What do you think of this movie?

Siena, Italy

Continuing the countdown to Italy 2012, I am looking back at Italy 2006.  We decided to stay in

Siena, which is not far from Florence.  We wanted a smaller, more relaxing town to stay in, rather than navigating through a large city like Florence.  One of my favorite days on this trip was the wine tasting

lunch.  We booked it from home with a walking tour before arriving in Italy.  I remember having lobster tail, I never eat lobster, but this was the best I ever had.  It’s too easy to make it rubbery, but this was

perfect.  We were in the Chianti region, so we were to taste 4 wines.  Our hostess was Alessandra, and she treated us like we were her family.  I apologize, I can’t find the name of the company we used.

I mentioned that I like dessert wine, so she went down to the cellar and brought a red and white up.  Yum.  We ended up shipping about 10 bottles of wine home, a couple we still haven’t opened!

Siena is a medieval town, surrounded by walls  that is famous for its twice yearly horse race, Corsa del Palio,  which goes around the  main square, Piazza del Campo.  One of the most beautiful churches in the town is the

Siena Duomo, which was built between 1215 and 1263.  A distinguishing feature is the black and white striped pillars along with the walls of the clerestory.  Part of our walking tour included a tour of the

nearby medieval hill town in Tuscany, San Gimignano.  Since it is high in the hills, there are beautiful views of the Tuscan landscape.  We were going to take a day trip to Florence, but never made it.

Instead, we rented a car and toured the Tuscan countryside, where we ended up in Pisa and Volterra (previous post).  First time I had ever seen grape vines!  So if you ever decide to visit Tuscany,

I recommend renting a car to explore on your own, if you don’t take part of a tour.

Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre, Italy
Rapallo, Italy-view from our room

I have Italy on the brain!  In two months we are off for our second trip to Italy!  The first

time was in 2006 where we toured northern Italy, and these are some photos from the

Cinque Terre, also known as the Italian Riviera.  We stayed in a town outside of that region

called Rapello, and took a train to see the villages of the Cinque Terre which consists of

Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.   There is hiking

along the coast that connects these small, picturesque villages.  The cliffs overlooking

the Ligurian Sea are pretty rugged.  But people live here with their vineyards, and even

have roosters!  One day we took a short boat ride from Rapallo to Portofino.  I believe

people with money hang out here 🙂  We saw many large yachts.  Some people were  doing a photo

or video shoot with some model walking around the upper deck of one of those yachts.

And the stores were all high-end designers.  I did not get any souvenirs there 🙂  When we

go back, we will be doing the Amalfi coast, which I believe will be even more beautiful.

Swans!

available at etsy.com

When we went to Switzerland a couple years ago, we saw a lot of swans in Zurich and Lucerne.  I was very excited.

I really don’t remember seeing a swan before, and didn’t realize how beautiful they are.  I think part of the reason I was

so fascinated by them, was they were acting as substitute pets.  I have 2 cats, and I missed them terribly, so I kind of

“adopted” all the swans we saw over there.  I loved feeding them, and took lots of photos.  My favorite was seeing the swan

family in Zurich.  We were walking to the lake, when across the lawn come the mom and her gray chics (I guess more

like teenagers).  I have never seen anything so precious!  The all walked in  a single row, and went into the lake.  I love

ducks too, and am I always happy to see ducks anywhere I go 🙂

The show was a success!

our photos on sheet metal
this was our display
Jim putting the photos on sheet metal
other artists’ paintings
at the RAWArtists show

On June 21,  my husband and I had our art show at an artists’ showcase at the

Mercy Lounge, Nashville, TN.   The room where we were to hang our art did not

allow for anything to be put into the brick walls, so they provided chains hanging from

the rafters.  Most artists would attach wire and S hooks, or punch holes in the corners

of the artwork, and attach to the chains.  My creative husband came up with the idea

to hang a piece of sheet metal on the chains, then our photos (which are mounted on

foam board).  We attached them with Velcro.  The sheet metal was 3×8 feet, and we

had to borrow a pick-up truck to transport it!  Everything worked out really well.

We even sold one!  The big one of the Champs Elysees that Jim took.  The night

was filled with music, fashion, and of course art.  We had a great time.  I don’t

know if we will do anything like this again, but now we have some experience.

RAWartists.org-Nashville, TN

available at etsy.com

Calling Nashville area residents!  As you may know, this blog is linked to my shop at etsy.com.

Someone from Rawartists.org contacted me through that site and asked if I wanted to be in a

showcase.  I never even heard of it.  They have one every month at the Mercy Lounge on Cannery Row.

Not only are there photographers, there are fashion and jewelry designers, musicians (it is Music City), etc.

My husband and I are both going to have work in this show on Thursday, June 21.  It will be really cool

seeing all the different forms of artistry in one place.  So I am asking you to please come support

local artists by coming to the show.  And if you are some sort of artist yourself, you can be in it too!  You

can apply to be in a show on their website.  They are always looking for talent.  If you are interested,

please purchase ($10) tickets through this link: http://www.rawartists.org/lisa08.  I need the credit,

and they are more at the door.  The last day to purchase is Monday, June 18.  The photo here is

my husband’s, and it will be in the show.   I really, really appreciate you support.  Hope to meet

someone there who actually read my blog, haha!  Thank you, Lisa Long.

Iron and Brick

photo available at etsy.com

This photo follows my  posts from other cities showing my obsession with

street lamps.  This was taken in New York’s Financial District.  There is certainly

nothing fancy about this particular light, but I like how the background contains

other favorites of mine: architecture and fire escapes.

Through the alley

available at etsy.com

I don’t know why, but I love alleys.  Not the scary ones you are supposed to avoid at

night, but ones with quaint little shops or bars hidden away from the rest of the city.

I guess its the mystery, or the challenge of seeing what you can find in that alley.  And

of course I love this alley because it has street lamps!  In earlier posts, I mention my

obsession with streetlamps 🙂  This photo was taken in Lucerne, Switzerland.  Lucerne

is a pretty town nestled in the Alps, with the Reuss River going through it, and Lake

Lucerne. The town is fully of these alleyways which contain quite a bit of shopping

for a city this size, I think.  I believe there are at least 3 H&M stores here!
